Hot Isostatic Pressing (often referred to as HIP, HIPing or the component as being HIPed) is a widely used process for removing internal porosity in cast products, forming and densifying powder metallurgy products and in diffusion bonding parts together. Using a high pressure inert gas to exert ‘isostatic’ pressure (uniform pressure is applied to the product in all directions simultaneously) together with high temperature, internal porosity and voids are eliminated and a homogeneous microstructure is achieved.
In the HIP unit a high temperature furnace is enclosed in a pressure vessel. Work pieces are heated and an inert gas, generally argon, applies uniform pressure. The temperature, pressure and process time are all controlled to achieve the optimum material properties.
The HIP’ing process has developed over the past fifty years and has now been incorporated as an integral part of the manufacturing process, reducing scrap and improving yields.
